PROCESS
-
Each piece is cut from the most suitable area of the leather,
carefully considering natural marks and the direction of the fibers.
-
When adjusting the thickness of the leather,
selected areas are skived thinner.
This allows parts to bend more easily
and prevents excess bulk where layers overlap.
-
Holes are first punched using a awl,
then the pieces are stitched by hand using the saddle stitch technique.
-
Urushi lacquer is applied,
and the piece is placed in a muro (curing chamber) to harden.
Over the course of one month, the work progresses while carefully controlling temperature and humidity.
-
Gold powder is sprinkled onto the surface,
and the piece is returned to the muro
to allow the urushi to cure once again.
